PB Jumbo Chalkboard Knock-off

I have been drooling over this Pottery Barn chalkboard for the last three issues of their catalog.
Pottery Barn's Jumbo Chalkboard
$299 plus $29.99 shipping is WAY out of my price range!  I had been thinking about it nonstop because I have so many large pieces from my latest "as is" bundle (that I picked up from Ikea last month) that I haven't used yet when it finally hit me!  Woman, get some molding, dust off the miter box and saw and make it yourself!  So.....I DID!
YAY!  I know there are tons of women out there who use power tools without a second thought...but I'll admit, I'm kind of accident prone.  One time I hit my leg with the running weed-eater, yea, I laid in my driveway for 20 minutes before I got the courage to even look at my injury.  Turns out it was nothing but a welt and small "scratch."  True story.  So, being the only adult at home right now, I have banned myself from using anything that could cause a major injury.....I mean, who would look after my kids until my husband could fly half way around the world?!?!?  Anyway, that was a little dramatic...point is, I used a miter box and saw to cut my corners and I'm really proud of myself!

The best thing??  I had everything on hand except the molding, so this basically only cost me $12!  Woop woop!!!!  Here's a break down of the sizes: Pottery Barn 66 in. high, 33 in. across, mine 55 in. high, 21 in. across.  A little smaller, but guess what?  I'm a making second one!  So happy that I found something to do with the large pieces!

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy Thursday!

Libby :)

  8. That's nice and all but what would it cost for someone who doesn't have chalkboard paint, primer, top coat, and large flat pieces of wood lying about?

Nice pics and great idea, but a little more detail would be nice, like how did you attach the pieces, nails? Screws? Staple Gun? Hot Glue? What type of wood was the backboard, how thick? did you need to sand it smooth or was the priming and paint enough?

  9. Metqa: I would love to respond via email, but you are a no-reply commenter, so just in case there are other people wondering the same thing, I'll respond here and try to break down the prices for you. Chalkboard paint {the one I bought months ago and is lasting forever} $9; primer {Krylon spray paint} $4; Krylon Banner Red 2 cans at $4; a large piece of flat wood {honestly don't have any idea, but I'm guessing no more than $20}; Liquid glue $5; and molding $12 = $58. Still SO much cheaper than $299! Also, I attached my molding by liquid nails, the backboard is probably 1 inch, and I did not need to sand my board, it was already smooth and ready for primer. I got my board when I bought a large "as is" bundle from Ikea and it consist of random pieces of furniture parts, so I'm guessing this board was a shelf for an entertainment center. Oh! And I had to use Spackle on my corners, and little sandpaper, so add on $5 if you don't have spackle around the house and a buck for sandpaper {$64 total}. Thank you for visiting my blog and if you have other questions, just ask :) Have a great weekend!

  12. Libby...how did you attach the molding to the board? Did you glue it on top of the board or around the edge?
